There are many things that you don’t want to see a dealership do to you as a new car buyer, but if you don’t want to alienate the dealer, there are some things that you should not do.
Here is a list of “don’ts” that you should abide by if you are really looking to get a good deal on a new car.
Don't lie about the condition of your trade in vehicle. The dealer will eventually look at it and this may increase your costs or even kill your deal.
Don't bother looking for a car if you have had a recent bankruptcy. You will likely not get approved for financing and you are wasting everyone's time.
Don't give the dealership a deposit and then try to take it back for no reason. This create's unnecessary ill will with the dealer and you may also lose money on the return. Instead, do your research in advance and be sure you want the vehicle before you make a deposit.
Don't bother lying about your debt load and credit rating because they will check it anyway.
Don't offer any money for a car unless you already know the dealer cost. Make sure you see the dealer invoice for the new car you are thinking of purchasing. If the dealer refuses, find another auto dealer who will disclose the information.
Don't be afraid to expand your shopping area. Saving thousands is worth a few hours drive and even a trip out of state. You can always negotiate on the phone or via e-mail to make sure your trip is not wasted. Your local dealer won't refuse your warranty service - even if the saleperson says so.
